Basic understanding of the practice of Ayurveda

By Paul Robinson at 2011-02-19 01:45:38
Living in the 21st century is a real challenge. This is the reason numerous Ayurveda courses are offered to the public. For quite some time, such learning efforts have been offering useful basic knowledge and understanding about overall health. If you aim to learn more about Ayurveda, you should enlist yourself in any of the available and offered courses for such knowledge.

How would you be able to learn more and learn best about this ancient Indian medicine practice? Well, if you have not been born in India nor have you lived many years in the country, you should strive harder to learn the practice. As a matter of fact, many Indians today do not know much about Ayurveda either, even if they have been born and have been raised in the country. You need to remember that Ayurveda is only a form of alternative medicine, which complements the current forms of medicine practices. It is not imposed nor is it made a legal and only medicinal option in India or elsewhere.

Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit word literally translated as "science of life" or "practices of longevity." Ayurveda, according to the discipline, is practically applicable to every living thing, as implied by its original Sanskrit name. Its sciences, according to its principles, attribute life to more things than what is normally perceived, examples of which also include wind, fire, air, the earth, planets and stars, among others, are all thought to possess conscience like living beings.

Key to understanding this discipline is the core basis of Ayurveda, which supposes that the entire cosmos or universe is part of one singular absolute and everything that exists in the vast external universe, is also mirroed in the internal cosmos of the human body.

Ayurveda aims to integrate and balance the body, mind, and spirit (it can be viewed as "holistic").
Although Ayurveda has been the main system of health care in India for thousands of years, conventional (Western) medicine is becoming more widespread there, especially in urban areas. About 70 percent of India's population lives in rural areas; about two-thirds of rural people still use Ayurveda and medicinal plants to meet their primary health care needs. In addition, most major cities have an Ayurvedic college and hospital. Ayurveda and variations of it have also been practiced for centuries in Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Tibet.

The term Ayurveda combines two Sanskrit words--ayur, which means life, and veda, which means science or knowledge. Ayurveda means "the science of life."
The concept of Ayurveda Panchakarma in healing is simply understood as the process by which the body is treated to eliminate toxic elements from it.

But before we get to know the process of Ayurveda Panchakarma, it is also important to know the key elements and basic understanding of the practice of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda school sciences actively promote toxin elimination from the body that increase immunity and bring about overall well-being. They teach students to balance the "dosha," one of the three biological humors or energies (kapha, pitta, vata) which combine in various proportions to determine individual constitution and mental and physical disorders. At Ayurveda school, students also learn methods to improve digestive functions, and enhance the body's immune system, and develop spiritual growth. Ayurveda schools instruct in therapeutically balanced diets, weight loss, exercise and meditation, and massage therapy.
